NAMING THE GOLF HOLES

Overview

Documents in the archive reference several attempts to adopt names for each of the eighteen MGGC holes during the 1970s and 1980s.

It wasn't until a 1999 letter to the Board of Management from member Stan Williams that there was a serious attempt to achieve that goal. Stan's letter prompted the Board to run a competition for members to suggest the names for the holes. Correspondence over the following 18 months recorded the various interactions. The final list of recommendations was:

1 Howard's Way

2 Sentinel (The Sentinel)

3 Dog Leg (Devil's Elbow)

4 Tier Drop

5 Garden (Signature Hole)

6 Three Sisters

7 Straightaway

8 Paperbarks

9 Half-Way

10 Devil's Elbow (Dog Leg)

11 Hillside

12 Traps

13 Road Side (Road Hole)

14 Peppermint Grove

15 Hill View (The Pines)

16 Bunker Hill

17 Lakeside

18 Homeward Bound

Of those names only hole 1 (named after the original course architect Al Howard) was officially adopted and signposted, and even that sign was removed in 2021.

The first attachment is an article that summarises the history of attempts to name the holes. The article also critiques the above list and suggests that, in hindsight, many of the names are no longer appropriate.

The second attachment contains chronological ordered copies of all of the correspondence including member suggestions and management responses during that 1999-2000 period.
