Washboard - wooden

Subcollections
Overview

A flat, rectangular wooden board that is used to wash clothes by hand. The flat surface with wooden ridges or bumps helps to agitate the fabric and remove dirt and stains.
On the other hand, the textured surface provides a gentle scrubbing action that is effective and limits the damage to delicate clothing

Historical information

Used for hand washing clothing. For 19th-century washboards, the ridges were often made from wood. By the 20th century, ridges of metal were more common.
