Mr George Mathea was interviewed by Mr Ken Spillman on 18 January 1987.

George Frederick Mathea was born in Queensland in 1898 and moved to Subiaco when he was five years old. His dad Vincent was a gold prospector of German origins and his mother rented various houses in Subiaco. George talks about his schooling in Subiaco from Primary to High School. He went on to get a job in the Lands Department and attended night school while he was working. Over the years, he had various public service jobs. George reminisces about the different jobs he had over years before his marriage. After he married, George and his family moved to Katanning where he did more study and became an accountant. He was appointed a life member of the Accounting Institute. George recalls living in Subiaco during two World Wars and the Great Depression. He discusses the recreational and night life of Subiaco including the Regal Theatre and football at Subiaco Oval
