Philips Portable Radio

Overview

Rectangular, red and cream, plastic and leather, Philips, 'All Transistor', portable radio. The radio has rounded edges and is covered in a thick, red, textured, leather with a gold painted trim around the edges. On the front left side of the radio is a large 'L' shaped section in relief which is covered in a thick, cream, plastic, open chequered weave, mesh. Along the bottom of the mesh in raised, gold plastic cursive letters is 'All Transistor'. On the front of the radio in the top right corner is a large round dial with red numbers and a black rotating needle, covered by a clear plastic cover with a gold-painted outer edge and a gold-painted circle in the middle. On top of the radio is a long, rectangular, raised cream, plastic section with three, rectangular, cream, plastic buttons in the middle with a rectangular, ridged, gold-painted, plastic button at either end. To the left of the buttons is a circular, cream, plastic, dial with a zigzag edge, set vertically into the radio so that only the very top is exposed. Above the buttons, on the top of the radio, printed onto the red leather surface, in bold gold letters, is the word 'PHILIPS'. Stretched across the top of the radio and connected to each side with a rectangular, ridged, brass, clip is a red leather strap with cream-coloured edges. On the back of the radio, along the bottom edge, there is a long, rectangular, panel cut out and covered in a raised, cream, plastic, open weave, mesh. On the back of the radio in both the bottom left and right corners is a rounded, red, leather, flap coming up from the base of the radio with a round, red painted, metal, press stud in the centre. On the base of the radio printed in small gold letters is 'GENUINE LEATHER'

Historical information

Isabella Gibbs worked at the ticket box for Crystal Cave for 25 years. The rangers at Yanchep National Park, including Ranger Rollie, Ranger Bennett and Ranger Lenny Gibbs, would gather at the Cave Ticket Box and listen to the radio for the cricket scores.
