'The Wonder Book of Soldiers for Boys and Girls'
c. 1915Antique book entitled 'The Wonder Book of Soldiers for boys and girls', Fourth Edition, edited by Harry Golding.
It has colourful cover and a spine illustration on a green cloth background. The cover depicts a British soldier in uniform (including Sam Browne belt, puttees and peaked cap) in front of a red, white and blue Union Jack flag on a decorative flagpole topped with a finial and long tassel.
He is holding a revolver in his right hand and has a bag attached to his left side He is standing on a mound of dirt from which a piece of barbed wire protrudes. The border of the cover is in gold.
The spine has an illustration of a Scottish bandsman carrying a drum and wearing a ceremonial headdress.The publisher's name appears at the bottom of the spine.
The back cover is highly decorative, having black line drawings of wreaths, ribbons and ropes over a shiny gold background.
The book is profusely illustrated with six double-page and four other coloured plates and over three hundred greyscale photographs and illustrations.
There is an inscription on the inside cover from a mother to her son, dated 9 December 1916.
The seller's name is written on a sticker on the inside of the book.
Harry Golding was born on 8 June 1870 in Hendon, the son of bootmaker Frank Golding and Mary Dancy. At a young age, he entered the advertising department of publisher, Ward and Lock (which became War, Lock and Co. Ltd in 1897).
From there, he rose to be a publisher's reader and the editor of 'The Windsor Magazine'.
He became the editor of a series of books for children entitled 'The Wonder book of...' which includes this title.
He also wrote a few novels, including 'Between Two Fires' (1900). He married and had a son and a daughter. For much of his life, he was deaf. Golding died on 1 April 1947 in London.
