A badly damaged sepia photograph of a young woman dressed in long sleeved jacket and long dress, sitting in a chair alongside of a young man dressed in a suit and vest. He has short hair and a full beard.

Historical information

Charles Quartermaine was the eldest son of Elijah Quartermaine and Elizabeth M Dickinson. He married Ellen Jane Wright on 16 May 1860 in Beverley, Western Australia. He died in 1910 and is buried in the Wagin Cemetery. The attached newspaper clipping details how the photograph was found.

Inscriptions and markings

On the back of the photograph handwritten in blue ink is “My dearly beloved Grandparents (who were married in the 1800 years Don’t know the exact date or year but it was in the early 80) who reared me from a baby 16 months of age till I was 11 years of old then I get we all (my Grandma & Grandfather) (my Dad Papa as we called him) & my one & only darling brother Arnold all went to my Dads brothers farm Mayfield West Wagin and lived there till my brother went to 1914 War and I got married in 1916 My grandfather dies in 1910 aged 72 and Grandma died in 1917 age 71 and my dear Dad died through a burning accident in 1938 God Bless them they were All Good people and I loved them very dearly"

On the back of the photograph handwritten in blue ink vertically is "The dearest and kindest woman ‘God’ ever made my grandmother Ellen Jane Quartermaine God Bless you we’ll meet again Grandma’ your grandaughter Alice"
