CLOTH, ALTAR

1903 - 1987
Overview

White linen, square altar cloth. Hand sewn hem all around. Embroidered white cross on one side.

Historical information

The cloth was used in the Congregation Church in Armadale before the Church's deconsecration, demolition, and subsequent rebuild.

Its use was to cover the altar which would symbolise care to the altar as well as serve as decoration.

The church was the first built in the area as the community felt that they required a place of worship for their spiritual needs. The land was donated by the Saw family.

The church would eventually have its final service a year or so by Pastor David Kernohan before its demolition in 1987.

The community would rebuild the church with many of its original materials in Minnawarra Historic precinct alongside the school house.

The cloth was used at the Congregation Church. Its purpose was both to cover the altar and decoration but also as a symbol in the Christian faith of care to the objects it covers.

The church it was used for was the first built in the area and was the result of a community donating resources to its construction such as the Saw family donating the land on which it was built.
