Historical information

Believed to have belonged to Matron Charlotte Letitia Despard (1872-1945), who ran her own hospital in Newcastle (renamed Toodyay in 1910) from 1905-c1908 before taking on the role of Matron of the Newcastle/Toodyay Hospital in 1910. She was born in Mortlake, Victoria and went on to serve with the Queen Alexandra Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve as a Staff Nurse from 1915-1917 in Egypt, England & the Dardanelles. Charlotte died in Leederville, Western Australia.

Possibly the second inscription refers to Mabel Amy Cecelia Rose-Despard whose death was reported in the 27 June 1914 edition of the Leader newspaper in Melbourne as having occurred on 19 April 1914.
