World War 2, South West Pacific Theatre, Imperial Japanese Navy, 1945

Overview

Japanese Rank and Trade Cloth Insignia, (donated 2015)

This black material strip has original Japanese Imperial Navy rank and trade cloth insignia.

Historical information

By 1920, Japan had the third largest navy in the world, behind the British Royal Navy and the United States Navy. This insignia, worn on the upper right sleeve, signified the rank of a first class leading seaman, a machine woven black patch with three horizontal bars above a stylized anchor. An alloy cherry blossom flower the colour of the Navy branch, (e.g. Engineering was purple), would have been affixed between the bars and the anchor.
