World War 2, Western Australia, WX32983 TREASURE, 2/16 Battalion, 1945

Overview

Khaki Service Dress Tunic, Lieutenant Peter William Treasure, WX32983, 2/16th Bn, 7th Division, New Britain, (donated 1978)

Our World War Two gallery depicts conditions on the Kokoda Trail experienced by the 2/16th Battalion. By August 1942, the unit was in action against the Japanese at Abuari. Forced to withdraw, they fought a series of desperate actions, suffering heavily. In late 1943, the 2/16th was sent into the Ramu/Markham Valley Campaign. The heroism of the Battle for Shaggy Ridge and the part it played, has become legend in Australian military history.

Lieutenant Treasure was part of the offensive to neutralise the Japanese base at Rabaul, the capital of New Britain, which began late in 1943, and continued until the end of the war in August 1945. His service ribbons include the Pacific Star (8 December 1941-2 September 1945). The green and yellow lines represent jungles and beaches of the Pacific islands, dark blue for the navy, red for the army, and light blue for the air force. Ribbon sets hold historical importance, being tangible reminders of service and wartime experiences
