Historical information

On 01 April 1874 John and Alexander Forrest set out from the Geraldton Hotel with their traveling companions to further explore the area from Geraldton through Central Australia to Adelaide. Upon arrival in Adelaide on 03 November 1874 the Mayor W. D. Allot delivered a speech addressed to "John Forrest Esq re and his traveling Companions" which was recorded and presented to the party.

Contextual Information

As well as being of national historical significance, the 1874 exploratory journey holds great significance to Geraldton and surrounding areas due to the resulting surveys which determined future use of the land. For Geraldton to host the party leading up to the journey and to be the official starting location for the exploration was of great excitement to the locals.
