Historical information

The Ugly Men’s Voluntary Worker’s Association of Western Australia Inc. was a fund-raising organisation established by lower to middle working-class citizens, in Western Australia in 1917. These citizens provided financial and physical assistance to those who suffered hardships after WWI.

A branch of the Ugly Men’s Association was formed in South Perth on 20 August 1918, with 34 foundation members. The Mayor of South Perth, Mr. Alexander Clydesdale was elected chairman.

The first project undertaken by the South Perth Uglies was building 49 Arlington Avenue. Private William Miller Kirk had returned from the war with a badly shattered right arm. William purchased the building materials with his war-time savings and the Uglies supplied the volunteer workers to build the house in September and October 1918.
