Navy blue covers with title on spine in black print. Inside the front cover is an introduction titled THE LIFE BLOOD OF AN EMPIRE. British possessions, dependencies or mandated territories are shown in black on this map of the world, but in addition there are numerous islands or groups of islands too small to show but which form an important part of the Empire. Each one of the small black dots represents a British ocean-going Merchant vessel, the whole being representitive of the average number at sea on any given day, totalling about 1,850 in addition to which there are 1,650 smaller and coastal vessels. The whole of this Empire has to be defended against invasion and every ship protected against attack over 85,000 miles of ocean routes by the Imperial Navy. Attached to the right is a map of the world in black, white and grey. Remnant of a pink tax stamp at centre/bottom of map.Title page is on [iii]. Roman numeral pages go up to [xxi]. 724 pages. At back of book, inside back cover, is a duplicate of first map in front cover. Scattered through the book are other maps, illustrations, photos of ships and flags, and how to diagrams. Index pages 687 to 724. Illustrations are fitted between consecutive page numbers, for example pages 32 and 33. Book was published by SAMPSON LOW, MARSTON & CO. LTD. Sampson Low was acknowledged world wide as the foremost expert on ship recognition, with his compilation of details of Naval vessels of all countries of the World.
