Historical information

Walter Tindal was born in Auckland, New Zealand. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force from Dairy Creek Station, outside Carnarvon in April 1915. Assigned to 28 Battalion as a Lance Corporal signaller, he embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia, on HMAT A64 Demosthenes on 23 July 1915. He served with the Battalion throughout the War and returned to Australia on 3 March 1919.

Sgt Tindall gained the skills and qualifications between the wars to become a Telephone Mechanic Grade 2. During World War 2, W78156 Sergeant Tindall served in 5th Line of Commications Signals. After World War 2, he continued his employment with the Postmaster General’s Department.
