'The Grange' Garden Croquet
c. 1910Large ornate, two storey house partly obscured by hedge and fountain on stone pillars. Steps lead down to wide, lawn terrace where three women and five children are playing croquet, watched by a man with a younger child. Lawn terrace in foreground features a large, classical statue of a woman and a sweeping bed of low shrubs and annuals being watered by a tall impact sprinkler. Natural vegetation in the background.
The Grange was built on the Perth-Fremantle Road (later known as the Stirling Highway) in the 1890's by HS Trigg (or possibly his grandson). The site now marked by Grange Street. The property was put up for sale in 1904. GH Cargeeg purchased The Grange in 1907. It was located on 11 acres between Claremont Avenue and the railway line, between Parry Street and Dean Street. George Camler Rose bought The Grange from Cargeegs in 1915 using his property Parkfield at Australind as part payment. The Rose family lived in The Grange until the upper storey burnt down in 1922 on the occasion of a ball in aid of Parkerville Childrens Home. Following the fire, the family moved to a two storey cottage on the estate. It was built about the same time as the large house, and with the same hand cut timber. It was built in the centre of the two blocks, corner of Park Street (now Albert Street) and the Perth-Fremantle Road. The family lived in this house until 1968 when it was sold. The Grange land subsequently subdivided into seventeen blocks and sold. The original Grange estate was one of the first established along the Perth-Fremantle railway line.
