1942 ITALIAN POCKET CALENDAR, WWII

1942
Overview

Small folded pocket calendar in two semesters.
Front image depicts St Michael the Archangel

Historical information

This pocket calendar was produced in fascist Italy and had a message for the people from dictator Mussolini.
The gist is, In this battle of blood against gold, god is on our side, and we will win!
Accompanying the text of Mussolini's message is the Baroque era image of Michael the Archangel defeating Satan by Guido Reni (1635).
This powerful symbol indicates how the fascist regime was characterising the nature of the struggle.
It invites the reader to associate the fight with the Prayer to St Micheal (Pope Leo XIII), which the predominantly catholic Italian population would have almost certainly connected this image with, a prayer calling for strength in the fight against evil in our times.
