INVITATION TO STATE RECEPTION IN CELEBRATION OF THE OPENING OF THE PARLIAMENT OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA : 9TH OF MAY 1901
1901Colour lithograph invitation to the opening of Parliament 1901 with words imprinted 'In CELEBRATION OF THE OPENING OF THE PARLIAMENT of the COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA To Meet Their Royal Highnesses the DUKE and DUCHESS of CORNWALL and YORK His Majesty's MINISTERS OF STATE FOR AUSTRALIA have the honour to invite "Mr Cuthbert McKenzie Mrs McKenzie" to an Evening Reception at the Exhibition Building MELBOURNE on the 9th May 1901, at 8 o'clock'.
The lithograph has background of intertwined vine and leaves embracing and joining together each element of text and imagery. The first and second sections are on flowing white 'ribbon' designs with gold text; the third section is a pale pink basic oval shape with a thin green border and gold text; the fourth and final section with space for a name has a white background with gold text and wider green border of basic rectangular shape. The bottom centre section has the British coat-of-arms on a pale pink background with thin purple oval shaped border, and includes a lion in gold and a unicorn in silver. Two female figures are drawn, one on either side - on the left, the figure representing Britania is dressed in a Roman-style leather chest guard and red skirt, holding a shield with the right hand with part of Union Jack on it. The figure on the right represents Australia is in a Greek-style blue full length dress with dark blue straps across the chest and around the waist. She is holding a shield with the Southern Cross on it.
