Virtual Discovery #58 - Kit Layout

Overview

Part of a series of “Virtual Discovery” presentations featuring the military heritage of Rottnest island produced in parallel with Virtual Visit posts relating to the Australian Army Museum of Western Australia. This “Virtual Discovery” focuses on the ritual of stylised military kit layout for inspection

Historical information

Formalised kit layouts have been a feature in militaries since time immemorial. There was a requirement for individual accountability of items issued at public expense. There was a requirement for items to be immediately at hand for use, if called to action. There was a requirement to ensure equipment was fit for purpose and serviceable. The passage of time and the evolution of technologies has not changed these requirements

Contextual Information

Rottnest Island was closed to the public for extended periods during the COVID-19 pandemic beginning in March 2020. The success of “Virtual Visi” series at the Australian Army Museum of Western Australia prompted the creation of a parallel series of “Virtual Discoveries” focussing on the military and heritage aspects of Rottnest Island.
