Historical information

The cast iron pot was used over an open fire at Canning Mills and then later in Roleystone by members of the Bettenay family in the 1890s and early 1900s. It was used to cook meals in and heat water. Arthur Bettenay arrived in Western Australia from England, via Queensland in the mid to late 1890s, working as a carpenter at Canning Mills. In 1900 he left his job and started Irymple Orchard. In 1904 Arthur, his wife and three young children moved into the timber slab hut. Water was pumped from a near by well.
