Was a common medicine for sore throats, invented by Australian born chemist George Bonnington in Nelson, New Zealand in the mid 1800s before being mass produced in the 1860s and continues to be sold around the world. It gained popularity for treating coughs, colds, asthma, influenza and bronchitis in New Zealand then Australia. It originally was a dark brown syrupy blend of vinegar, honey and carrageen, a extract from seaweed.
For many years Bonnington's Irish Moss was registered by the Therapeutic Good Administration in Australia but in 2021 it was removed from the register as it did not meet the requirements of the register.
