Overview

A digitised copy of an 8mm film taken of the presentation of colours to the Bunbury High School Cadet Unit.

The ceremony took place on the Bunbury Oval in 1961 and was followed by a march through Bunbury, proudly displaying the new colours.

The major features from the film, in sequence, are :-

Shots of the school frontage.
Staff and student spectators in the grandstand.
Pan of oval to saluting base, to Western Command Band, to Cadet Unit formed up in line with No 1 Platoon on the left and No 2 Platoon on the right.
Arrival of the school principal, Mr. F. Johnson, greeted by "Present Arms".
Arrival of the reviewing officer, representing G.O.C. Western Command, greeted by "General salute".
Inspection of the unit by the reviewing officer and party.
The new colours placed on the piled drums for the religious part of the ceremony.
The religious ceremony — the flag is consecrated by an Anglican clergyman, then blessed by a Roman Catholic priest and finally dedicated by a minister from Other Denominations.
The flag is handed to the cadet-officer standard bearer by the reviewing officer.
A detachment of the cadets returns the drums to the band.
The colours are marched in slow time to their position in the centre of the parade line.
The Western Command Band marches past in slow time and takes up its position in rear of the cadets.
The cadets march past in line, first 1 Platoon, then the colours, then 2 Platoon, returning to their original position.
Advance in Review Order and Present Arms.
The march through Bunbury along Victoria Street and right into Stirling Street.

Historical information

The colours were donated by Stephen P. Lucich, Senior master, French and German and Officer-in-charge of the Bunbury High School school cadet unit during most of the 1950's.
