Asbestos mine, Lionel.

Overview

Historical information

Situated about 40 km north of Nullagine. The Lionel Asbestos Mine produced high-grade asbestos. Demand for asbestos had been exceeding supply since 1921, with fibre being shipped directly from Port Hedland to London via Singapore. Australia became a major exporter of asbestos. Sadly, that industry has left a legacy of deaths and illness from diseases such as mesothelioma. Asbestos has not been mined in Australia since 1983.
