Murdo MacKinnon was five years old, when in 1923, his parents migrated the family of 4 girls and 6 boys from the Isle of Lewis, Scotland to Australia where they settled in Wellard (part of the Peel Estate).
Murdo attended Wellard School (also known as Richardson Swamp School) then on to Bunbury High School where he was recognised for his outstanding athletic ability over 880, 440, and 220 yards and a mile. In 1933, Murdo was named Junior Boy Champion.
Murdo left school at the age of 16 and enlisted in the RAN on the 22nd August 1934. During his career he spent time on HMAS Canberra, HMAS Cerebus, HMAS Voyager and HMAS Sydney
Murdo was promoted to the rank of Petty Officer on the 1st October 1940 and was on the HMAS Sydney when it was sunk, with no survivors, on 19th November 1941 by the German raider Kormoran.
