Overview

Craig House a hostel for boys attending Bunbury High School.

Historical information

Craig House was officially opened by the Deputy-Premier and Minister for Education (Mr. A. F. Watts) on Friday 23rd March 1949.

It was named in recognition of the part played in its foundation by Mrs. Leslie Craig of Dardanup, a former State president of the Country Women's Association.

The building, which was formerly used by the Fresh Air League, and cost the Government £5,050 for extensive renovations and improvements.

Craig House was located between Carey Street and Fraser Street, Bunbury in an area known as Marlston Hill. Craig House was run by the Country Women’s Association (CWA) as a hostel for boys going to Bunbury High School.

Craig House remained at the Marlston Hill location until around 1965, when it moved to newly constructed premises at the corner of Pickersgill, Acacia and Sherry Streets in Bunbury. The new hostel provided accommodation for both boys and girls attending Bunbury High School

Craig House closed in 1969 due to financial issues, and its association with the CWA ended.

Craig House reopened in 1972 under the management of the Country High School Hostels Authority, before closing once more in 1978.
