MEDITERRANEAN MONK SEAL (Monachus monachus)
There are probably no more than 1000 Mediterranean monk seals left today, since their habitat - the Mediterranean, North Africa, Madeira-is being more and more invaded by humans. Because their remote habitats did not include any land predators, they never developed the ability to escape on land, and people are able to walk right up to them. They are considered endangered, and because of their greatly reduced numbers, there are fears that the species will not survive the 20th century.
92.
The paintings represent a body of work by well-known American marine conservationist, author, artist and natural historian Richard Ellis (1938-2024).
