Contextual Information

The coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth was performed at Westminster Abbey on 12th May 1937, the date that had been scheduled for the coronation of Edward VIII.

The Soho Pottery Co was established by Samuel J. Simpson in 1904 at the Soho Pottery Works, Tunstall. In August 1910 the company moved to the larger premises in Cobridge and became renown for their Solian Ware products. In 1944 the company changed its name to Simpsons (Potters) Ltd.

The British Pottery Manufacturers Federation was founded in 1919 and continued to trade until early 1995 when the company was dissolved as a result of its activities becoming fully incorporated within the British Ceramic Confederation. The design for this mug was approved by The British Pottery Manufacturers Federation and then circulated to approved Potters.
