THE ROMANTIC STORY OF WEMBURY CHURCH

Werburgh, Wembury, Devonshire. 24 pages, illustrated, black & white photographs, List of Ministers and Incumbents 1611 - 1976-. On page 24 is mentioned that inside the church on the south wall hangs the Australia Flag. This was presented to the church in 1941 by the Government of Western Australia in memory of Major Edmund Lockyer, whose father, Thomas Lockyer built the present Wembury House. On January 21st 1827, Major Lockyer hoisted the Union Jack at King George's Sound, in Western Australia for the first time claiming the whole continent for the Crown. , he settled permanently in Australia in 1828. In 1979 to mark the 150th Anniversary of the State of Western Australia, the State Government of W.A. presented their Flag to the Wembury Parish Church where it now hangs beside that given in 1941, and a plaque to mark this event and the exploits of Major Lockyer on the wall beneath. On the title page of book is notation 'Greetings and good wishes from Wembury to everyone in Albany J. Everett, R.M. Everett 27.1.84' .
