Historical information

From a series of photographs taken by Ian Molyneux for the National Estate Survey of Subiaco in 1985.

The lake was constructed from 1960.

Originally, the area was a favourite gathering place for Aboriginal people. From the time Shenton Park was settled the area was temporarily the base for the Subiaco football club, and after 1908 treated as a rubbish dump, until it was developed as a park and lake. Retilculation was installed and lawns were planted in the late 1950s. Wildlife was threatened for a time in the 1960s, until conservationists helped retain it as a sanctuary for birds and tortoises.
