Overview

Gilded brass tsuba of aoi-gata shape, with cherry blossom design. Tan woven cotton braid ribbon with traditional criss-cross woven around cream ray skin handle. Ornate brass pommel featuring cherry blossom flower motif with swivel loop on end through with blue and brown tasseled braid tassel.
Painted brown coloured plain steel scabbard with single scabbard ring.

Historical information

Japanese Imperial Shin Gunto (Army Sword) with brown/blue tassel with scabbard as presented to Sergeant Alan John MEATON WX27464. Comes with original surrender cloth label denoting owner, rank and unit as well as maker.

Contextual Information

This Second World War blade was made by a highly respected swordsmith named Miyaguchi (1896-1955), who, in 1933, was appointed as a resident swordsmith to the Tasukuni Military Shrine. He used the names Yasuhiro, Toshihiro and Kunimori. This blade is signed Ikkansai Kunimori and is a good example of this type of weapon.
