MURRAY DAY HOLE IN ONE TROPHY 18TH HOLE

Overview

Murray Day Hole in One Trophy 18th Hole

The picture attachments show a hole in one trophy in the name of Murray Day. The inscription in the second attachment shows that the hole in one was achieved on the 18th hole in September 1976. At that time holes 17 and 18 were configured as par 5 / par 3. This explains that at the time Murray made the achievement the 18th was a par 3. The par 5 / 3 configuration for holes 17 and 18 was reversed in 1977 to par 3 / 5.

The ball - see attachment 3 - is a Slazenger brand Top Pro B51 model, numbered 10. It is a "small" ball as during that period balls were 1.62 inches in diameter compared to the later 1.68 inches diameter.

Murray Day was one of the club's founders and served as Vice President and President of the club. The trophy was temporarily loaned to the MGGC by John Day, Murray's son, in 2022 to enable these pictures to be recorded. The trophy was passed to John after the death of his father. Interestingly, during that period a hole in one trophy was not provided by the club to members who achieved the feat so it would appear the Murray purchased and engraved the trophy himself. The records show no other golfing achievements for Murray so he was understandably proud of his hole in one.

Hole in one records show that only six members achieved a hole in one on the 18th hole. (Refer to Item 2021.120)
