Queen Victoria Gift Tin - 1900
Commemorative tin with hinged lid. The lid is red with a gold and blue border. The edge of the lid is also painted in gold. The centre of the tin has an embossed image of Queen Victoria in gold. To the right of the Queen's image is her cypher, and to her left the text 'SOUTH AFRICA 1900' in blue and yellow. Under the cypher and text is printed a message in cursive script from the Queen, 'I wish you a happy New Year Victoria R'. The tin originally contained a half pound of chocolate.
The three major British chocolate manufacturers, Fry, Cadbury and Rowntree, all Quaker owned companies, produced the chocolate tins. Initially they were reluctant to support the war effort because of the Quaker pacifist ethic. All three manufacturers refused to accept payment for the order and donated the chocolate unbranded. However, the Queen insisted the troops knew they were getting British chocolate and the firms backed down, marking some bars. The tins themselves were never branded.
During the conflict, more than 100,000 tins, each containing half a pound of plain chocolate, were produced. They were very popular with the troops and were often retained by them (sometimes with the contents uneaten) as treasured souvenirs of the war.

Queen Victoria intended that every soldier and officer would receive a box with the inscription "South Africa 1900" and "I wish you a happy New Year" in her handwriting. The Queen funded the tins which had been designed with rounded corners to make them easy to store in soldiers’ knapsacks.
The Australian Army Museum of WA has several examples in its collection and one is displayed in the Pre-194 Gallery with other mementos of the conflict. This gift set the example for the Princess Mary Christmas gift box distributed to all members of the armed forces of the British Empire on Christmas day 1914, during World War I.
