Engraved metal common seal for the Toodyay Road Board, used to authentic documents.
Circular shape and attached to an metal plate (with the correct orientation facing forward), with eight sides slightly larger than the seal. This plate is in turn affixed to a wooden block for display purposes.
The design includes words and a swan swimming on water with wings partially spread under the southern cross.
The swan is facing to the left indicating the design is post 1953.

Historical information

The seal was placed behind a sheet of paper and pressure was applied from the front. The seal was then embossed on the document, verifying its contents.
This seal was used by the Toodyay Road Board.

Contextual Information

The Toodyay Road District was established on 24 January 1871. The Newcastle (later Toodyay) townsite separated as the Municipality of Newcastle on 2 October 1877. The municipality merged back into the road district on 8 March 1912. On 1 July 1961, Toodyay became a shire under the Local Government Act 1960, which reformed all remaining road districts into shires.
