Inside the bag is a collection of quartz, chert and mylonite fragments produced during stone tool manufacturing

Historical information

On 12 and 19-21 and 27 August 2022 Whadjuk Noogar traditional owners, Horizon Heritage Management and a representative from Stockland conducted a cultural material salvage survey across the surface of a registered Aboriginal Site located that is located within a new stage of the Sienna Wood residential development in the suburb of Hilbert.
The survey uncovered primarily debitage and flakes showing evidence of stone tool manufacturing on the site which was located close to a seasonal water souse. The survey uncovered cultural material made from quartz, quartzite, crystal quartz, chert and mylonite. The Whadjuk Cultural Advise Committee agreed that this material was to be transferred to the City of Armadale History House for safe keeping along side with cultural material stored at the museum in 2016 from a more extensive survey conducted in 2015

This is part of a collection of items that represent the pre-1829 activities and used of the local area by the traditional owners the, Noongar Whadjuk. The collection includes the report and recovered material of an archaeological excavation, done in consultation with Noongar Elders, conducted before a major residential development in the 2010s and 20s.

Statement of significance

This is part of the broader evidence of continuous occupation and industries of the Noongar dialect groups who lived along the Swan Coastal Plain. Archaeological evidence indicates over 30,000 years of Noongar occupation and industries in the COA region. Part of the archaeological surveys conducted from 2015 to the present on the land being developed for sale, this survey is one of a series of investigations of material related to the larger development. The survey is located within the Haynes/Sienna Wood residential development in the City of Armadale (COA), by Stockland.
