The event was in commemoration of the revolution at Wu-chan on October 10, 1911, which brought about the ultimate downfall of the Manchu regime and ushered in a republic based on the teachings of Dr Sun Yat-sen. The United States Navy Headquarters in Western Australia provided its Navy Band to play at the ball. The proceeds of the ball were for Chinese relief.
