Contextual Information

An invention pioneered at RPH in the 1990s by plastic surgeon Fiona Wood and medical scientist Marie Stoner. It was used after the Bali bombings to repair patients’ wounds.
Wood and Stoner developed the RECELL® Spray-On Skin™ kit, which takes a small piece of a patient’s skin, processes it in enzymes, and sprays it back on the patient.

Statement of significance

This item is of historical and scientific significance. The device revolutionised the treatment of burns. A postage-sized sample of skin is harvested by the surgeon, suspended in a solution and sprayed onto the wound. This enables the cells to cover an area 80 times larger than the skin sample taken. The invention is an example of Western Australian medical research and innovation that has advanced medicine.
