Operating Table
1930 - 1960a. Mobile stainless steel operating table comprising a tabletop in three sections, with an operating table column and base (or transporter) on four rubber wheels. A foot pedal on an extended arm allows the table to be easily raised using a pumping action; a second foot pedal gently lowers the table hydraulically; a metal wheel on the side allows the table to be tilted. Other levers are used to adjust the positioning of the table, to raise the head or lower limb sections.
A metal label rivetted on the base reads ‘Smith Minor’. A second label beneath it reads: ‘23’.

The mobile operating table was designed to be easily moved within the operating room. The individual segments of the tabletop can also be easily removed and replaced.
The table would have been used in conjunction with a foam mattress covered in a waterproof vinyl or plastic.
A photograph in 'Perth Hospital Report and Statistics for Year ended 30th June, 1935' p19 shows a similar operating table in use.

Item is an example of a general surgery operating table used at Royal Perth Hospital c1930 – 1960. It is in very good condition.
It has interpretive capacity for communicating the history of medicine, surgery and developments in technology and in the hospital itself. Excellent item for tactile tours.
Item is representative of the field of surgery and the time in which it was used.
Item has aesthetic appeal owing to its impressive robust stainless steel (or chrome) design.
