John Frederick Harbeck was born on 28 November 1860, in Bundalaguah, Victoria, Australia, his father, Joachim Harbeck, was 33 and his mother, Margaretha Dorothea Henrietta Thomsen, was 33. He married Sarah Ann Carter on 27 July 1892, in Clunes, Victoria, Australia.

John Frederick Harbeck died on 8 August 1943 at the age of 82, and was buried at Nannup Cemetery.
Sarah died 10th May 1951 and is buried at Karrakatta Cemetery.
The family moved to Western Australia in 1896, John started work as an Engine driver, employed on the construction of Mundaring Weir.
Later, John took up residence at Barrabup, which was a thriving timber town. He was an engine driver on the Barrabup & Ellis Creek lines and had an association with the Kauri Timber Co. Due to dwindling timber supples and a shortage of workers during the war years, Barrabup Mill closed and everyone, houses and all moved to Ellis Creek.
In 1920 John Frederick bought a farm on the Bridgetown – Nannup Road, about 7 miles from Ellis Creek. He called the property "Lorraine". The family grew fruit and vegetables and sold them on the vegetable round to Ellis Creek, Nannup and farms along the Brockman Highway.
