Overview

3 valved brass Euphonium made by Coueson & Cie with a Blessing mouthpiece. The instrument shows dents from wear and tear and there is evidence of solder repair work to reattach the neck to the body.

Historical information

Coueson & Cie was a firm of French instrument makers which flourished in Paris from 1883 to 1950 and specialized in brass instruments. In its heyday the company produced some 30,000 instruments per annum.

By 1911 Couesnon had expanded to eleven factories and more than 1000 workers but by 1927 the workforce had shrunk to 200. During the 1930s they began catering to marching brass bands, and became the premier supplier of marching brass instruments in France. Many of their instruments were imported into the United States, including many that were sold under private labels.

Nowadays the company is known as P.G.M. Cousenon and has only 25 employees working in its Paris shop making handmade brass band instruments.

Contextual Information

Most Coueson instruments from the late 1800s into the 1950s had a two digit date in a pineapple (or "grenade") included in the inscription on the bell.

The inscriptions on this instrument definitely date and place this euphonium as being manufactured by Coueson et Cie in 1927 at 94 rue d’Angouleme 94, Paris and being imported and sold by Musgrove's Ltd, Perth.

Musgrove’s Ltd. was formed in December 1923 by MD Musgrove, AT Grey, RD Scott and FC Kingston and traded in Pianos, Player-Pianos, Phonographs and other musical instruments. In the 1930s they diversified into radios and opened the 6ML radio transmitting station which closed due to labour shortages in 1943. Musgrove’s Ltd is still trading as a music store in Perth.
