BSHS 70th Anniversary 1923-1993
1993A booklet produced for the 70th anniversary celebrations of Bunbury Senior High School.
Planning for a Bunbury High School (BHS) began in 1917. The school was to be built on top of a sand dunes known as Boulter's Heights. The site chosen by the Minister for Education, Sir James Mitchell.
Surveying was completed in 1920. The contract to construct Bunbury High School was let on the 9th January, 1922. The contract for the school went to Totterdell & Bros. of Perth.
By the 1st October, 1922, a two-storey building comprising of 8 classrooms, 2 science laboratories and a gymnasium was completed at a cost of £15,189.00
Premier Sir James Mitchell officially opened Bunbury High School on the 9th February 1923. The school opened with 162 students and 11 staff.
From the 1950s the school was sometimes referred to as Beachess or the Temple of Beachess. The origin of the nickname is likely to be a 'mock' sermon in the 1952 Kingia magazine entitled 'The Temple Of Beachess'.
The school's status was upgraded in 1959 and it became Bunbury Senior High School (BSHS).
