Historical information

Schools of domestic arts, prevalent in 1900s to the 1920s, were early educational institutions focused on training young women and girls in scientific household management, cooking, food preparation, sewing, mother craft, laundry and family care.

The objective of these schools was to improve the professionalism of domestic labour and to prepare girls for home management or institutional careers. Students would often split time between basic academic subjects and practical domestic skills.
