YACHT, CIRCE, AND ITS OWNERS
B/W copy of 8 mounted photos: yacht Circe lower centre with ships in background; skipper, F W Pead, in double breasted jacket and cap above; 3 crew members, in dark polo necked jumpers bearing [CIRCE/WA YC] on the chest, each side. Mount heavily decorated with scrolls, plant and sailing motifs. All 7 people syndicate members. One mount decorated.
During the early 1900s the Circe was owned and sailed by a small syndicate of which F.W. Pead was the leader until about 1908. Other members were G.A. Bower, R.Finlay, R.Hamilton, J.R.McKay, J.Mufing, A.Trebblecock. The Circe was sailed mainly in ocean races under the auspices of the West Australian Yacht Club, Fremantle, of which F.W. Pead was commodore for a period. During the 20s, the Circe was moored at Peppermint Grove and it sank at its moorings there in the early 30s. The last owner was H.Osborne. Allan Pead, son of F.W.Pead, believes that Circe Circle in Dalkeith was named after the yacht.
