Historical information

Olive Rose Galliers was born in Narrogin in c1919 and grew up on a farm in the area. After finishing school Olive had to do a couple of extra years of education via correspondence to get into nurses training.
Olive did her nurses training at King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women in Subiaco. During this time she would regularly visit the Martin family, who were relations, in Kelmscott, often riding from her home in Welshpool to Kelmscott and back.
Olive spent a year training in midwifery and child welfare at King Edward before moving to Wooroloo, 60km east of Perth, for further training at the Wooroloo Sanatorium where she treated patients with Tuberculosis for a year followed by training at hospitals in Bunbury and Kalgoorlie. Olive then went on to work at a number of country hospitals.
Olive Galliers started at the Armadale Hospital on Church Avenue in 1958 in the position of Matron. In 1964, she transferred to the new Armadale Kelmscott Memorial hospital as Matron in charge. There she initially managed a staff of 95 and 82 beds. During this time she helped Mrs Colyer start up a meal on wheels program using the hospital kitchen. She retired from the hospital in 1984.
