Historical information

The Hackett Shield was donated to the W.A.R.A in 1902 by Sir John Winthrop Hackett M.A., L.L.D., M.L.C, Barrister /Editor and part owner of the West Australian Newspaper.

He was also generous benefactor to the University of Western Australia, as evidenced by Hackett Drive in Crawley, and Winthrop Hall at the University. The Shield was made locally by Frederick Williams, head of the Art Department of the Perth Technical College,
with the possible assistance of James Linton who later produced the Empire Match Shield.
The original value of the Hackett Shield was twenty guineas. It was originally put for competition in 1902 between West Australian six person teams, from Infantry Battalions, Artillery Units, the Police Force and Bona Fide Rifle Clubs. Each participant had seven shots over distances of 200,500 and 600 yards. Team entry cost was one pound.
The initial competition was won by the Perth Rifle Club at the South Perth range. Perth club won it again in 1903 at Kalgoorlie and again in 1904 at Karrakatta, earning them the right of possession.

Re-introduced as a perpetual trophy in 2000 courtesy of the Perth rifle club, the Hackett Challenge Shield was for W.A regional zones teams tournament.
