Historical information

In May 1941 Australian, New Zealand and British troops were involved in ten days of desperate fighting against German forces on the strategically important island of Crete. The Battle for Crete would see the Germans lose 3,800 dead and 2,600 wounded. The Allies’ losses were approximately 1,700
dead and 15,000 captured.The citizens of Crete, men, women and children, paid a high price for defending their island, hiding and assisting Australians and other Allies and resisting German occupation throughout..
