Part of a series of “Virtual Discovery” presentations featuring the military heritage of Rottnest island produced in parallel with Virtual Visit posts relating to the Australian Army Museum of Western Australia. This “Virtual Discovery” focuses on "Military Wrecker Recovering Gun Barrel"
An M543 Heavy 6x6 Wrecker of 113 Field Workshop, Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers recovering major components of the Bickley Battery guns including both 6 inch Mk XI barrel s. The guns were sold for scrop in 1963 but shipment from the Island was financially unviable. Major components lay buried in situ until the mid-1980s when Army resources were used to recover some of the barrels for conservation and display.

Details
The Rottnest Island was closed to the public for extended periods during the COVID-19 pandemic beginning in March 2020. The success of “Virtual Visi” series at the Australian Army Museum of Western australia prompted the creation of a parallel series of “Virtual Discoveries” focussing on the military and heritage aspects of Rottnest island.
