Overview

A round brass and enamel medallion that features a crested emblem with text circling the edge on a blue background on the obverse, and a large white '47' on a diagonal red and black background with text circling the edge on a blue background. Each side is encircled in a rope edge design.

Historical information

This medallion, more commonly known as 'Challenge Coin', was produced for the HMAS Leeuwin 47th Ramsey & Stevenson Divisions 50th Anniversary held in April 2024. It was presented by a visiting graduate to the museum in February 2026.

Contextual information

From January 1960 to December 1984, nearly 13,000 boys aged 15 to16 years old joined the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) as Junior Recruits (JRs) to complete a year of training in the Junior Recruit Training Establishment (JRTE) located in HMAS Leeuwin, on the banks of the Swan River at Preston Point in Fremantle, Western Australia.
