World War 2, Western Australia, W30209 NEWMAN, 5 Garrison Battalion, 1945

Overview

Khaki Service Dress Tunic & Trousers, Major Harold Percy Neuman, 799, 28thBn & 44thBn WW1, WW1 medals/Croix de Guerre with Star (on display in WW1 gallery), W30209, WX31044, 5th Garrison Battalion, Fremantle, (donated 1978)

Historical information

Khaki service dress tunics are made of barathea wool, a tightly woven durable fabric resistant to snagging and tearing. Initially, Garrison Battalions wore the same colour patch, a black square on a green square. Requests were made to individualise patches, so in late 1942 geometric shapes were adopted, green on black in a reversal of the original design, like the one on Harold’s jacket. Garrison battalions were largely comprised of World War 1 veterans.

Inscriptions and markings

The Croix de Guerre (War Cross) is a French military decoration created in 1915 awarded to soldiers mentioned in dispatches (bronze oak leaf) who distinguished themselves by acts of heroism. The bronze star on Harold’s Croix de Guerre service ribbon indicates a Brigade or regimental citation for bravery. His medals are on display in our World War One gallery
