ORAL HISTORY (AUDIO): GIMM, DON
2003 - 2004Donald Edgar Gimm was born in Subiaco on 23 July, 1940 and lived at 36 Peel Street in Jolimont. During the interview he tells of life in the area as a small boy. Activities included making canoes to launch on Jolimont Lake, playing football, games played in the local bushland, the beach and Reabold Hill. He was friendly with the Indigenous people who lived nearby, and talks about how they were viewed by the local community. He attended school at Jolimont Primary and continued his education at Junior Tech on Newcastle Street, Perth. He talks about the perception of Subiaco, as well as how the community came together through local churches, theatres and sporting venues in the area. Don left Jolimont for Melbourne, then returned to Perth and bought a house in Bayswater. He discusses his progress from a Freemason to a Master of the Lodge, and how being a part of the lodge has impacted his life. Don also talks about when the television was introduced, and the ways in which Subiaco has changed and developed over time.
