Overview

Alec H. Choate was born in Hertfordshire, England, on 5 April 1915 and the family moved to Australia in 1922. Alec attended school at Lake Gwellup initially, and then Subiaco Primary School from 3rd to 6th standards, where he and Jim Phillips became close friends. They both were interested in literature, with Alec writing short stories and Jim doing appropriate drawings, which they published in booklets. Alec attended Hale School, and after several jobs he decided to become a writer, studying at home (228 Hensman Road) for four years. His story 'Two's Company' was published in the Western Mail in 1935. He joined the Australian Imperial Forces in 1939 - 1945. After military service he became a surveyor for Metropolitan Water Supply and retired in 1975. Wrote and had poetry published, with commendations and awards from 1972, highlighted by the WA Premier's Award for Poetry 'The Wheels of Hama' in 1997. An autobiography in verse 'My Days Were Fauve' was published in 2003.
