Overview

The Tangye Soho 17 bhp single cylinder reciprocating piston steam engine was manufactured in c1904. This particular engine was used to drive small belt driven machinery or dynamos in rural Western Australia. It was designed to oeprate at steam pressure up to 80 psi (550Kpa) the engine using a Pickering type governor with a combined equilibrium throttle and stop valve (no governor fitted as part of this display). This particular engine was driven by compressed air and demonstrates the use of early steam engines for the generation of electricity. The engine has state significance.
